International events: The Headquarters of the United Nations in New York hosted the literary exhibition to the First World War Centenary
Literary exhibition dedicated to the First World War Centenary, opened at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York. At the initiative of the United Kingdom, countires - members of the world organization prepared a stand, which cited iconic poem of their poets dedicated to the War of 1914-1918.
The exhibition, which is located on the first floor of the skyscraper of secretariat, is interactive. Each stand has a matrix QR-code, scanning which you can listen to an audio recording of the poem by the Permanent Representatives of the United Nations.
Russian diplomat Vitaly Churkin chose "Offensive" by Nikolai Gumilev, who in 1914 came to the front as a volunteer.
The highlight of the exhibition is the frontline photograph of the grandfather of Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, which is located at the Russian stand. Vasily Yegorovich Churkin served as artillery man and went through the war, reaching the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the picture he is depicted in the company of two of his colleagues.
Diplomats from other UN member countries have also chosen their favorite works of frontline poets of the First World War. Thus, the Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN Harald Braun sang a poem of William Terminal "Battle of the Marne", and his Austrian colleague Martin Saydik - "Grodek" by Georg Trakl. Serbian diplomat Yves Emuovich quoted a poem b Dusan Vassiliev "Song of the husband after the battle", while the French Permanent Representative Gerard Araud - Louis Aragon's work "War and what happened after".
