Memory of Russia: Monument to “Russian Guards of the Great War” opened near the Vitebsk Railway Station in Saint-Petersburg

Monument to "Russian Guards of the Great War" was opened on August 1, 2014 on the square near the Vitebsk Railway Station in St. Petersburg. The event is timed to the 100th anniversary of Russia's entry into the First World War.

The monument is a volumetric cross with a bas-relief depicting soldiers in a railway carriage, and it is from the Vitebsk Station in 1914-1918 echelons went to the front. According to Director of the M. B. Grekov Studio of military artists Andrei Sokolov, the captured image "embodies in bronze a march "Farewell of Slavianka", which has become the hallmark of our country during the First World".

The opening of the monument has become one of the central events of the Day of Remembrance of soldiers who died in the First World War in 1914-1918. In addition, at the common cemetery in Tsarskoye Selo took place the funeral ceremony for those killed in the Great War, and in the House of officers - a round table with the participation of historians, military personnel and representatives of the city administration.

Until the end of the year in Saint-Petersburg is planned to hold thirteen exhibitions and two research conferences, dedicated to the First World War.
