Memory of the World: Monument to the Heroes of the First World War opens in Moscow on Poklonnaya Hill

August 1, 2014 on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow will be held the opening of the monument to the Heroes of the First World War.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin will attend the opening ceremony of the monument on Poklonnaya Hill to heroes who fell in the First World War.

The opening of the monument on the day of the century entry of Russia to into the First World War - the central event in the commemorative events marking the First World War Centenary.

On the initiative of the Russian Military-Historical Society a year ago was declared a competition for the best design of the monument to the Heroes of the First World War on Poklonnaya Hill. The project won the People's Artist of Russia, sculptor Andrey Kovalchuk. The monument is created entirely on the people's money.

The monument to the Heroes of the First World War on Poklonnaya Hill – is not the only project of RVIO dedicated to the return of the memory of the "forgotten war." The monument to the Heroes of the First World was opened on 30 May this year in Kaliningrad, which was the first in the last hundred years confirming the participation of Russia in the war.

In memory of the First World War, the Russian Military and Historical Society in 2014 will open a number of monuments, stele and memorable characters. In the town of Gusev (former Gumbinnen) in 112 km from Kaliningrad will be erected a monument to the "Bayonet Attack" by sculptor Vladimir Surovtsev. Three of the most iconic military graves in the villages of Pushkin, Sovkhoznoe and Kubanovka of the Kaliningrad region will be restored and marked with memorable characters. June 21 in Banja Luka (Republika Srpska) was erected a bust of Nicholas II. Monuments to the Heroes of the First World War opened in August in Pskov and Lipetsk. There will also be also installed a memorial sign to pilots of the squadron airships "Ilya Muromets".
