History of Russia: Marking an emergence of Russian statehood commemorative events in Veliky Novgorod

One hundred fifty-two years ago, on September 21, 1862, in Veliky Novgorod Russian Emperor Alexander II unveiled the  "Millennium of Russia" monument. The Day of Military Glory of Russia is also established in this date in honor of the victory of the Russian regiments, led by Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy, over the Mongol-Tatar forces in the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, as well as the World Day of Russian Unity. On September 21 Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the holy day of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin.

Regional law "On the anniversaries in the Novgorod Region" the days of September 21-23 are accredited as the Days of Russian Statehood Emergence.

In 2014 the main events of the Russian statehood celebration are being held on September 21 in the Novgorod Kremlin at the "Millennium of Russia" monument.

A grand ceremony with the participation of officials, a pageant, dedicated to the heroes of Russia and its history, a review of Western Military District Honor Guard unit, a concert of creative teams of Veliky Novgorod and municipal districts are in the agenda of celebrations at the monument.

In addition, the opening of the Museum of Written Culture and Publishing will take place in the Church of the Presentation of the Lord of the Saint Anthony's Monastery; guided tours of associated with the Novgorod tradition and culture historic places, as well as the book exhibitions and other artistic events will go on in the Day of an Emergence of Russian Statehood.
