Museums of Russia: The exhibition “Treasures of the oldest museum in Siberia” from the collection of the Irkutsk Regional Museum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

The exhibition from the Irkutsk Regional Museum "Treasures of the oldest museum in Siberia" was opened in the Sakhalin Regional Museum (Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk) on October 23, 2014. More than 100 unique museum objects in the exhibition tell about the history of the Baikal region.

The exposition introduces with famous scientists of the region, their geographical discoveries, cultural and educational activities. The exhibition features exhibits telling of Irkutsk as an administrative, spiritual, cultural and scientific center of Eastern Siberia. A part of the exhibition is devoted to the figures of the East Siberian Division of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, which names are inseparably connected with Irkutsk - Alexander Kolchak, Vladimir Obruchev and Nikolai Przewalski.

Another section of the exhibition presents the ethnography of indigenous peoples of Siberia - Buryat, Evenk and Tofa. Visitors will see exhibits reflecting religion, culture and way of life of the people among which are shaman cult items, traditional clothing and footwear, fishery.

A special place in the exposition belongs to archaeological finds, which over 140 thousand in museum collections. Visitors are presented items of Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages - products made ​​of bone and minerals, tools, sculptures of people, animals and birds.

In addition, in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was brought a part of the museum's collection of Buddhist artifacts collected in Mongolia, China, Korea, Japan, Buryatia. Visitors will see original works of art - Buddhist icons, statues of Buddha, ritual objects.

The exhibition will run until December 7.
