Monuments of book culture: The presentation of facsimile edition and a digital copy of the First Lithuanian Statute 1529 in Saint-Petersburg

October 24, 2014 in the Main building of the National Library of Russia (Saint-Petersburg) is held the presentation and a solemn donation to the National Library of Russia of a digital copy of the First Lithuanian Statute 1529.

In its turn, the National Library of Russia will receive a gift from the Lithuanian side – a copy of the second edition of the Statute.

Statute 1529 is a detailed code of feudal rights, acting in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, - presents a great scientific interest. It gives a wealth material for the study of economic, social and legal relations of the XV – early XVI centuries on the territory of Lithuania itself and the territory of Belarus.

The Statute was not printed. Its lists in the first half of the XVI century were complemented with new articles. Translations of the text of a Statute from western language to Latin (1530) and Polish (1532) were also remained in manuscripts.

The first Lithuanian Statute 1529 is stored in the Manuscript Department of the National Library of Russia. The text of a Statute is written in Belorussian cursive of the end of the XVI – early XVII century. The watermark on the paper indicates the appearance time of this manuscript of the end of the XVI – early XVII century.
