Society and culture: The exhibition “Central Asia in life and work of the Roerich” in Moscow

The exhibition "Light of Shambhala. Central Asia in the life and work of the Roerich" opened on October 15, 2014 at the State Museum of Oriental Art (Moscow).

The large-scale exhibition is devoted to the double anniversary: the 140th anniversary of the birth of Nicholas Roerich and 110th anniversary of the birth of his son Svyatoslav.

Along with paintings and graphic works of both artists exposition includes oriental works of art from the collection of the Roerich, as well as archival material (manuscripts, documents, memorabilia, photos, and more). The audience has an extensive collection of artifacts collected by Roerich in India and Central Asia. Among them are the Buddhist tankhi, Indian miniatures, sculpture, clothing, household, woodcuts and manuscripts.

The exposition consists of paintings from the collection of the State Museum of Oriental Art, the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum of the series ("Maitreya"), the Yuri Roerich Memorial office in the Institute of Oriental Studies (manuscripts on palm leaves), the Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York (graphic works), as well as private collections.

The public is first presented oriental costume of Svyatoslav Roerich and Catherine Campbell, who in the 1920s often posed for the artist as a model.
