Memorable dates of Russia: The exhibition “The Great and Mighty Spirit…” to the 200th anniversary of M. Y. Lermontov in Kemerovo

3 October 2014

The V. D. Feodorov Kemerovo Regional Scientific Library hosts the exhibition "The Great and Mighty Spirit…" to the 200th anniversary of the birth of M. Y. Lermontov".

The exhibition to the anniversary of the poet is based on book material from the collections of the Russian State Library (Moscow). Presented originals of lifetime editions of poems by M. Y. Lermontov in the most famous literary magazines of 30s - 40s of the XIX century are "Contemporary" and "Notes of the Fatherland". The exhibition also shows the first posthumous collection of the poet's works, undertaken by A. Smirdin in 1847 from the library of the Novo-Mikhailovsky Palace of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich. The first translation of the collected works of Lermontov in foreign languages, published in Berlin by Friedrich Bodenshtedt in 1852 stands out.

Thanks to a law of legal deposit for library founded in Moscow in 1861 of the Moscow Public and Rumyantsev Museum, which is the successor of the Russian State Library, were preserved and put on at the exhibition the first scientific, commemorative, fully illustrated and academic collected works of the great Russian poet, as well as publications of individual works of M. Y. Lermontov with the best illustrations of famous artists.

The exhibition features autographs of the poet from the Manuscript Department of the Russian State Library in photo copies that allow learning about the handwriting of M. Y. Lermontov and the nature of his works over the verses. A great interest will cause materials of the duel of N. S. Martynov with the poet.

Today’s digital technology made it possible to include a diverse material form the Russian State Library to a virtual exhibition, created to the anniversary of M. Y. Lermontov and to present it together with the book exposition.

The exhibition will run until December 10, 2014.
