The Russian language: The Day of the Russian language celebrated in the UNO

The event devoted to the Day of the Russian language, takes place on November 11, 2014 at the UN headquarters in New York. This year it is timed to the 450th anniversary of the first Russian printed book, as well as the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Lermontov. 

The Russian Language Day is celebrated annually in the premises of the UN since 2010, each time it is associated with any event or direction of Russian culture. So, in 2010, at the headquarters of the organization was honored the Great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, 2011 marked the 300th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Lomonosov. In 2012, the fore was the Russian language in cinema, and a year later it was the turn of the theater, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding playwright Konstantin Stanislavsky.

"This year the event is dedicated to two events: the 450th anniversary edition of "Apostle" by Ivan Feodorov and the 200th anniversary of the birth of the poet Mikhail Lermontov", - said the press secretary of the Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN Alexey Zaitsev. According to him, on the evening, there were invited diplomats and Russian-speaking members of the secretariat of the world organization, and its leadership. The guests are offered multimedia tour into the history of the two themes.

Officially the Russian Language Day is celebrated at the UN on June 6 - Pushkin's birthday, but on this occasion the event is usually held at the end of the year. Special dates in the calendar and the United Nations set aside five other official languages of the world organization: English (April 23), Arabic (December 18), Spanish (October 12), Chinese (April 20) and French (March 20). The days are held in the framework of the existing UN program of support and development of multilingualism and cultural diversity.
