6 November 2014

November 6, 2014 in the Peter and Paul Fortress opens the exhibition “Saint-Petersburg in the work of German photographs of the XIX century”.

The exhibition, combined about 80 photographs from the collection of the State Museum of the History of Saint-Petersburg and the Institute of Russia Literature of RAS (the Pushkin House), is organized as part of the project “Fotorossika”, the purpose of which is the study of the photographic iconography of Russia, created by foreign authors.

Saint-Petersburg from its foundation is an international city. Representatives of different peoples have contributed to the formation and development of its culture. The history of Petersburg photography here is not an exception. An essential role in the creation of the iconography f Petersburg of the XIX – early XX century belongs to German photographers.

The exhibition in the Peter and Paul Fortress presents little-known unique photographs of the city, created in the XIX century in Petersburg by photographs-settlers from German lands: Karl Bulla, Karl Dautend, Alfred Lawrence, Albert Felisch. The work of these four German photographers working in different photographic genres: portraits, views, reportage photography - adequately conveys a picture of the life of the imperial capital of the XIX century.
