Exhibitions: The Roman mosaic from the city of Lod in Israel presented at the State Hermitage Museum
December 19, 2014 in the hall-transformer of the general Staff (the State hermitage Museum, Saint-Petersburg) opened an exhibition “Unfading colors. Rome mosaic from Lod (Israel)”.
The exhibition at the Hermitage completes nearly a five-year journey through Europe and America amazing in craftsmen, size and quality of preservation of the Roman floor mosaic.
The mosaic was discovered in 1996 in a small Israel city of Lod. Shortly after the disclosure it was re-covered with meters of earth. This step allowed securing a unique monument for a while, until it was a question about its fate. In 2008 were found funds for the construction of the Archaeological Center of mosaics, the main exhibit of which was supposed to be this great deal, which is now displayed directly on its historic site. After re-opening the mosaic in 2009, it was dismantled and attached to the new, ultra-light bases to enable its transportation from place to place.
The monument dates back from the end of the III - early IV century, the time, when in the Jewish city of Lod, included in the Roman Empire, lived representatives of different faiths – pagans, Jews and Christians.
The exhibition is accompanied with films, photographs and texts, telling of the mosaic and amazing history of its opening, as well as additional materials – a multimedia program, which gives the public opportunity to learn about samples of Roman floor mosaic, stored in different museum of Saint-Petersburg.
