World history: The exhibition of posters of the First World War presented at the Pushkin Reserve

15 December 2014

The exhibition of posters of the First World War "Poster - a weapon of war" of the State Museum of Alexander Suvorov was opened on December 13, 2014 in the A. S. Pushkin State Museum-Reserve "Mikhailovskoye" (the Pskov region).

The First World War was met by Russian population with enthusiasm. Many considered it fair and called "Great", "Holy", and sometimes even "second home", by analogy with the Patriotic War of 1812. In August 1914 everyone hoped for a speedy victory.

An important role in the occurrence of such optimism belonged to poster sheets, which were issued in the first days of the war across the country with hundreds of printing houses. In Moscow, Petrograd, Riga, Kiev, Odessa such large printing companies as lithographic T. Kibbel, I. D. Sytin, E. F. Chelnokov, I. M. Mashistov, A. P. Korkin and A. V. Beideman , R. Golik and A. Vilborg quickly responded to the events in the country and started to produce chromolithographs with a variety of stories on the theme of war. In a burst of desire to contribute to the help of neighbors, explaining to him the events and to instill in him the confidence of victory turned to this genre and famous artists K. Korovin, A. Lentulov, K. Malevich, V. Mayakovski, L. Pasternak and many others. The First World War was a powerful impetus to the development of poster art.

A part of the printed production is presented at the exhibition in the Pushkin Preserve, dedicated to the First World War Centenary.
