World culture: Works by Russian and Western masters of the XIX-XX centuries presented at the exhibition “And the Color and the Sound…” in Moscow
December 2, 2014 the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow) hosts the exhibition “And the Color and the Sound” and the XXXIV International festival “December evenings of Sviatoslav Richter”.
The exposition, presented at the White hall of the Main building, by tradition complements a concert program of the festival and promotes the dialogue of the two arts.
This year the musical festival and the exhibition are dedicated to the upcoming centenary of the birth of outstanding pianist Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997).
In the name of the exhibition “And the Color and the Sound” was made a poetic line from the novel by Hermann Hesse "Glass Bead Game", symbolizing the relationship of music and painting, color and sound. With different variations of this theme viewer is being introduced with the works of Russian and Western European artists from the collection of the State Pushkin Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Louvre and Orsay, the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris); Reina Sofía (Madrid); Gallery of Old Masters (Dresden). The exposition features over 30 works.
Before entering the White hall two pictures of the XVII century, depicting the allegory of the music – “Saint Cecilia” by Pierre Mignard from the collection of the Louvre (Paris) and “Woman with a viola da gamba” by Bernardo Strozzi from the Old Masters Gallery (Dresden).
Works by Russian and Western masters of the XIX-XX century are placed in the White hall chronologically. These are paintings on literary subjects, portraits of musicians and composers, abstractions, as well as sculptures.
