History and culture: The exhibition “Alexander, Napoleon and Josephine. The story of friendship, war and art. From the collection of the Hermitage” in Amsterdam

29 April 2015

In the year of the 200th anniversary of the Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna the State Hermitage Museum (Saint-Petersburg) presents in the Exhibition Center “Hermitage-Amsterdam” the exhibition, dedicated to the main characters of that era, - Alexander and Napoleon.

More than two hundred exhibits from the museum collection, including paintings, decorative-applied art, weapons and personal belongings, will tell the public the history of two great rulers.

The friendship, love and policy are the central theme of the exhibition. The art collection of the Empress Josephine, which includes works by Italian and Dutch masters such as Potter, van der Werf, Luini and Canova, occupies an important place in the exhibition. The fate would have been in such a way that a large part of the collection of Josephine was in the Hermitage. Some of the masterpieces from its collection for the first time are shown to the Dutch public.
