International events: The exhibition “Russian charity and Armenia 1915-1923” in Saint-Petersburg

April 1, 2015 in the New building of the National Library of Russia (Saint-Petersburg) is opened the exhibition “Russian charity and Armenia 1915-1923”.

The exhibition is dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of civilians in Western Armenia, tragically died in 1915-1923. Thanks to the activity of numerous public organizations of the Russian Empire there were saved the wounded and the displaced people.

For the first time at an exhibition in the National Library of Russia are presented unique documents on the activities of charitable committees in Russia and editions from the NLR in Armenian and Russian languages. These are magazines published in 1916-1918 to raise money and draw attention to events in Turkish Armenia “Armenian Bulletin” and “The Armenians and the War”. Among the exhibits - an appeal to the citizens of Petrograd for donations in favor of Armenian refugees, statutes charities census of refugees, reports on collected funds.  

The exhibition presents works of Armenian poets and prose writers Daniel Varuzhan, Siamanto, Ruben Sevak, Grigor Zohrab, tragically died in 1915.

The exposition is complemented with photographs, provided by the Armenian community of Saint-Petersburg.

The exposition contains materials from the Russian Book Collection, the Department of National literatures, the Russian Journal Fund, and the Department of Prints.

The exhibition is organized by the National Library of Russia together with the Armenian Apostle School of Saint-Petersburg, the General Consulate of the Republic of Armenia in Saint-Petersburg, the Armenian national and Cultural Autonomy of Saint-Petersburg.

The exhibition will run until April 22.
