Memorable dates: The International Day of Museum celebrated in the world

18 May 2015

May 18 all over the world is celebrated the International Museum Day. This day was established in May 1977 at the XI of the General Conference of the International Council of Museums in Moscow on the initiative of the Soviet delegation. In anticipation of this day, traditionally the third Saturday of May in many countries and across Russia is an action "Museum Night" or "Night of Museums".

Each year, the theme of International Museum Day is being produced by the expert network of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The theme in 2015 is designated as "Museums and sustainable development of society" (Museum for a sustainable society).

One of the major challenges of our time, faced by society in all countries of the world, is the need to combine new ways of life and development with the interests of the fragile nature. The transition to sustainable development of society requires the invention of new methods of thinking and behavior. Museums play a key role in this transition. They promote sustainable development and serve as a real laboratory for testing of the best practices.
