President of Russia and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Vladimir Putin attended a military parade on Red Square in Moscow to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in the 1941–1945 Great Patriotic War.

The military parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War has become one of the largest in the history of Red Square.

More than 2,000 veterans of the Great Patriotic War attended the parade in Red Square as guests of honour.

In memory of all the fallen during the Great Patriotic War, for the first time during a military parade Vladimir Putin announced a minute of silence.

After the parade, together with the heads of foreign states and governments, Vladimir Putin paid tribute to those who were killed in the Great Patriotic War by laying flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden.

On Victory Day, Vladimir Putin joined the Immortal Regiment march in Red Square with a photograph of his father, who fought in the war.

Mr Putin said that is was the courage and blood of ordinary Russian and Soviet soldiers that laid the road to Victory.“When we carry their photos, we pay tribute to all that they did for our country, and at the same time, we are conscious that now the responsibility for Russia lies on our shoulders, and we must be worthy of our fathers’ and grandfathers’ feat,” the President said.
