History of Russia: The birch bark was first found in Vologda

In Vologda in the cultural layer of the XIV-XV centuries was found a birch bark. This archaeological find was a sensation. Previously, these ancient scrolls were not here found.

According to the head of the archaeological expedition Igor Kukushkin, letters on birch bark more than three centimeters wide preserved and can be read. While pinpoint the dating of the scroll failed. This will be done after a thorough analysis.

The find could make adjustments to the preconceived idea of the role of Vologda in the history of ancient Russia. Previously, such scrolls, archaeologists found in capital cities. Total birch bark manuscripts were found in the excavations in 9 localities.

Most "messages from the past" were found in Veliky Novgorod. Since the middle of last century, when it was discovered the first birch-bark scroll, their number has reached more than one thousand. Last year, one month in Novgorod it was found 6 more documents of this kind.
