Memory of the world: Monument to the last battle of the Second World War opened in the Kuril Islands

The island Shumshu, which is part of the Kuril Islands, hosts a monument in the memory of participants of the last battle of the Second World War. Bloody battles for the island went from 18 to 23 August 1945. As a result of fighting were killed about 700 people.
The opening ceremony was attended by political and community leaders, war veterans, representatives of the command of the Far Eastern Military District troops, members of the search expedition.
