Society and church: “In the track of fathers, in the track of history. On the 400th anniversary of founding the Cyril & Athanasius Monastery in Yaroslavl” exhibition in Yaroslavl

20 August 2015

August 14, 2015, as part of the exposition "The Tale of Igor’s campaign" at the Yaroslavl Museum Reserve, opened an exhibition "In the track of fathers, in the track of history. On the 400th anniversary of founding the Cyril & Athanasius Monastery in Yaroslavl."

The museum exhibition not only features the materials on the Cyril & Athanasius Monastery (1615), but also tells the story of several churches, currently assigned to the monastery – the Vernicle Church of the end of 17th century, as well as Znamenskaya Church, attached in the early 20th century, adjacent to the medieval Znamenskaya tower.

The exhibition includes photographs and postcards of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, graphic works, in particular, a reproduction of Ivan Belonogov’s watercolor painting made by the artist in 1851, as well as works of applied art made of precious metals used to officiate - incense, altar crosses, icon frames, a great sakkos of the Vernicle Church of 1612. Visitors will undoubtedly be interested in Gospels, manuscripts of the 17th – 19th centuries, as well as pre-revolutionary print books about the history of the Cyril & Athanasius Monastery, the Vernicle Church and the not extant Resurrection Church.

Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve holds the largest collection of works in the field of Orthodox art, including those originating from the temples, which the exhibition tells about. Many exhibits are on display for the first time.
