History and culture: The exhibition “Saint Warrior Christopher” in Sviyazhsk

From August 8 to November 1, 2015 in the exhibition hall of the Museum of the History of Sviyazhsk (Tatarstan Republic) is held the exhibition "Saint Warrior Christopher", implemented with the support of the President of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan.

The idea of the exhibition is linked to the presence of the Assumption Cathedral in Sviyazhsk of a unique fresco depicting St. Christopher the Martyr with a horse's head, dating from the second half of the XVI century. Despite the fairly wide range of monuments of the XVI-XVII century (temples and icons), dedicated to this saint, Sviazhsky image of Christopher is remained one of the oldest and most authentically preserved a way that underlines the unique value of the outstanding murals of the Assumption Cathedral in Sviyazhsk. This story became the original card of the island-city, often used to illustrate when it comes to frescoes of the Assumption Cathedral, where the image is located.

The purpose of the exhibition project "Saint Warrior Christopher" – to show the importance of the image of St. warrior Christopher in the world of spiritual culture and define the role of the fresco of St. Christopher at the Assumption Cathedral in the history of Russian Orthodox culture as one of the characteristics that allow this monument attributed to the sites of world significance.

The exhibition is the largest inter-regional museum project. It involved 17 museums and open-air museums from 11 regions of Russia.

The exhibition features 20 icons depicting St. warrior Christopher, one enamel, stole, prints, etc. Icons identified for this exhibition are the temple, houses, family and date from the XVII - beginning of XX centuries.

This exhibition project is carried out in Russia for the first time. Its implementation will be the first important step to understanding the unique image of St. Christopher in the Assumption Cathedral of Sviyazhsk.
