
Memory of Russia: Monument to Samuel Marshak inaugurated in Voronezh
Inauguration of the monument to the poet and translator Samuel Marshak, who was born in Voronezh, took place October 28, 2015 in the courtyard of the house where he the writer had lived.
Samuel Marshak was a prominent children's poet, translator and playwright.
Voronezh Region was home to Marshak. As a child, the writer lived in Voronezh suburban settlement Chizhovka, where his father worked at a soap factory. In the spring of 1915, Marshak moved to Voronezh, where he lived in the apartment of his uncle. This house survived to this day. A memorial plaque was put up on its facade in 1989. In the courtyard in front of the house there is now a monument made by a Voronezh sculptor Maxim Dikunov.
According to the regional government, the inauguration of the monument is "one of the most significant events in Voronezh, the cultural capital of the CIS in the Year of Literature."
Installation of the monument to the poet preceded to the opening of the Children's Theatre Festival "Marshak" held at all theatrical and concert venues of Voronezh from 31 October to 8 November.
