
Museums and society: The center for monumental painting of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve is open to visitors
On October 1, 2015 the Center for Restoration of monumental painting of the Novgorod Museum Reserve (Antonovo) opens its doors to tourists.
Anyone can visit the Center as part of a tour group. Tourists will get acquainted with the work of the restorers of frescoes in the Church of the Assumption on Volotovo of the XIV century and the Church of the Transfiguration on Kovalev of the XIV century.
The center for the restoration of monumental painting, which is a branch of the Novgorod Museum Reserve, was opened in May 2015. It is located in the western and coastal buildings of the monastery of St. Anthony. On an area of over 2000 sq. meters are placed restoration workshops, archive, research library, a laboratory for monitoring the state of monumental painting, laboratory of the physico-chemical studies, and temperature and humidity, as well as provided an open storage of fragments of frescoes.
The establishment of the Center was made possible with great support from the Ministry of Culture of Russia, to fulfill the dream of many generations of restorers of monumental painting. It was the Novgorod Museum-Reserve which was able to create a space that would have made it possible to continue the long-term work for the return of masterpieces. The buildings of the monastery of St. Anthony are working on the frescoes of temples destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. Among them are paintings of the Church of the Archangel Michael in a skillet, Church of the Assumption on Volotovo.
