World culture: The exhibition “Imaginary East. China in Russian. XVIII – early XX century” in the “Tsaritsyno” Museum-Reserve

November 24, 2015 in the Grand Palace of the “Tsaritsyno” Museum-Reserve (Moscow) is opened the exhibition “Imaginary East: China in Russia. XVIII – early XX century”.

The exhibition tells the story of how passion of Chinese culture emerged and developed in Russia, and how this passion appeared in Russian art – from the style chinoiserie to avant-garde style.

The exposition in seven halls of the Grand Palace includes more than 600 rare items of not only Chinese, but also Russian and Western European art in “Chinese” style of 13 leading museum of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg and the Russian State Library. 

The exhibition “Imaginary East” presents not only museum rarities, but also modern “fantasies on Chinese theme”. The surprise will be “summer house of Confucius” with antique bronze statue of the thinker and original editions of works by Chinese sages, first translated into Russian in the XVIII century. In a separate hall visitors are offered the installation “Magic Lantern”, created on the traditional Chinese theatre of shadows.

The exhibition will run from November 25, 2015 till April 3, 2016.
