History and culture: The exhibition “New Year gifts and greetings. How it was…” in Saint-Petersburg

The Museum "Nevskaya Zastava" (St. Petersburg) until January 30, 2015 hosts the exhibition "Christmas gifts and greetings. How it was…" which tells about traditions of Christmas gifts and greetings in Russia from the XVIII-XX centuries.

The exhibition presents museum exhibits with stories, including articles of the XIX - XX centuries, old Christmas decorations and ornaments, unusual gifts, and the best works of participants of the creative contest "Father Frost, gifts cannot be much". The exhibition also includes an interesting historical information.

New Year's gift is often accompanied by a holiday postcard, to sign the postcard because it was a special ritual. Mail messages were created very elaborate, so they are still remain. Visitors can see unique postcard of blockade years provided Children's Museum of Postcards. In addition to the main exhibition on January 18, 2016 – to the Day of breaking the siege of Leningrad – will be opened the expanded exhibition "Postcards of blockade days". These special works not only demonstrate examples of courage of the Soviet people and its belief in the inevitability of victory, irony and humor of enemy invaders, but they are also highly artistic works created by all the rules of a postcard.
