29 December 2015

Russian State Library of Arts with the participation of the Cervantes Institute in Moscow presents the exposition "The Return of the Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance" from the cycle "Eternal images of world literature". The exhibition takes place at the turn of 2015-2016s when marked the 400th anniversary of the full version of the novel and the 400th anniversary of the death of M. Cervantes, the Year of Literature and the Year of Spain in Russia.

The exposition is dedicated to the transformation of the image of Don Quixote in literature, theater and cinema. The exhibition first connects the unique materials of the two libraries - RGBI and the Cervantes Institute.

Writers, composers and artists of different times and countries appealed to the product of Cervantes. In Russia, the popularity of the novel caused a whole series of theatrical performances: from pastoral scenes, operettas and musical comedies of the XVIII-XIX centuries to the modern stage and cinematic interpretations.

The exhibition first exhibits costumes of B. Popov to the play "Liberated Don Quixote" by A. V. Lunacharsky directed by I. M. Lapitski (1924) and sketches to costumes for the film about Don Quixote by E. P. Maklakova - People's Artist of Russia, the only in Russia laureate of the American Television Academy of Arts "Emmy".

Among the curiosities of the exhibition - engravings on drawings by Spanish artists and editions of the novel of the XVIII century.

Especially valuable are book illustrations by G. Dore, S. Dali, R. Balak, I. Bogdesko, S. Brodsky, Kukryniksy and Spanish artists, whose works are little known in our country: G. Pretto, J.-R. Sanchez, E. Herreros from the library of the Cervantes Institute,

The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to trace the history of the best opera, ballet and drama productions in the works of outstanding photographers of the XX - XXI centuries.

The exposition is open from December 25 until January 24, 2016.
