Information technology and culture: The project of electronic collection of filmstrips to be presented at the Russian State Children’s Library

March 24, 2016 in the Russian State Children's Library (Moscow) will be held a press conference dedicated to the project of electronic collection of filmstrips.

Participants will discuss the background and objectives of the project, the stages of creation and promotion of electronic collection of slides. This idea was first put forward at the round table on the problems of reading with the participation of Chairman of the State Duma of Russia Sergei Naryshkin, which took place in May 2015. The roundtable discussed the preservation of films and filmstrips of creating an electronic collection of slides. The Ministry of Culture has supported this idea and appointed RSCL the project coordinator. 

The first decade of such project aims to find, to digitize, mixing register of all children remaining in the country of slides, and - as a result - to create the most complete electronic collection with detailed bibliographic catalog.

In the course of 6 months it was formed the registry, which included more than 5 000 unique names filmstrips. According to the technology, specially developed for the project (high-resolution scanning (4000 dpi), the removal of film defects, cropping, color correction, PDF with recognized sub-layer, a bibliographic description) has already processed more than 1500 films.

All digitized materials are accessible in the halls of RSCL. After the conclusion of a license agreement with the State Film Fund it appeared the opportunity of placement of digitized slides at the National Children's Library e (NEDB), which is the most appropriate tool to provide access to these materials.
