World History and Culture: "It was in the Stone Age..." exhibition in Moscow
“It was in the Stone Age...” exhibition opened in the State Historical Museum (Moscow).
The exhibition introduces visitors to the Stone Age in an unusual perspective - presenting the paintings, drawings and stone artifacts associated with the epoch of an origin and formation of archaeology in Russia in second half of XIX - the first half of XX century. The artists helped archaeologists to breath a life into the Stone Age, so their fantasies were based on actual archeological findings, and an imagination were revealed the inner world of ancient man, his thoughts and emotions. Historical reenactment as a visualization of ancient history has been and remains the most important component in museums business, archaeological science and popular literature.
The exhibition opens with the renderings and sketches of the late XIX - the beginning of the XX century, and ends with a presentation of modern digital paintings, dedicated to ancient human ancestors.
The first collectors of antiquities acquired along with the Scythian gold, the treasures of the pharaohs and Greek vases, but also the Stone Age tools - cutters, axes and adzes. The exhibition presents for the first time the original items of the first collections of the Historical Museum, brought on the XIX century by the antiques collectors from Russia, France, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, India, Polynesia, New Guinea and Australia. Visitors will get acquainted with the scientific work of the first Russian archeologists - Count A. S. Uvarov and Professor V. A. Gorodtsov, with their archaeological finds and drawings. Many of the exhibits are new.
An important place is given to the illustrations of popular science and children's literature of the Stone Age. Young visitors will see the old children's books about the adventures on the Stone Age and action figures of primitive people, will be able to take pictures in the image of a prehistoric boy.
