Society and book culture: The days of Orthodox book in the Pskov and Novgorod regions

From the 10th to the 15th of March 2016 the Pskov Regional Universal Scientific Library is carrying the already traditional Days of Orthodox Book.

Today the society and the libraries as a whole are facing a goal to drive people, and especially the younger generation, to reading a serious literature, requiring of the reader a great deal of innermost work. And to reach this goal the Pskov Regional Scientific Library organizes and carries out a significant amount of accomplishments - actions of book and reading promotion and familiarization with a rich Russian culture. Carrying the Days of Orthodox book proves that out.

A series of events will take place from the 10th to 27th of March within the framework of the annual Days of Orthodox Book in Veliky Novgorod: book exhibitions, excursions to Novgorod monasteries and to the library of St. Sophia Cathedral, meetings with writers and poets, dialogs of the priests with the school students, concert performances the choirs of Sunday schools of Veliky Novgorod. Also, within the Days of Orthodox Book the "Russian Athos in the History of Russian Culture" round table, "The First Book Printed in Russia" open lesson, lecture-tour of the "Rare Books in the Collection of the Novgorod Museum. From Handwriting to Printing” exhibition, "The shrines of Orthodoxy" book fair (about Russian monasteries and churches) will be held.

Day of Orthodox books was established by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on the initiative of Patriarch Kirill and timed to the date of release of the Books of the Apostles by Deacon Ivan Fedorov, which is considered the first printed book in Russia - its output is dated the 14th of March on the Gregorian calendar (March 1 on the Julian calendar) 1564.
