History and culture: One piece exhibition of "The Coronation Album of Emperor Alexander III» in Gatchina
From March 10 to June 5, 2016, the Gatchina State National Park and Museum presents a one piece exhibition of "The Coronation Album of Emperor Alexander III."
The exhibition presents the ceremonial album entitled "The Description of the Holy Coronation of Their Imperial Majesties Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna of All Russia. 1883" (the year of publication of the album is 1885) from the collection of rare books of the Gatchina State National Park and Museum. The exhibition is dedicated to the 171st anniversary of the birth of Emperor Alexander III.
"The Description of the Holy Coronation..." is the book in publishing crimson leather-bound with a rich gold-embossed on the covers, triple gilt edges, white moiré endpapers. In the album, consisting of 8 chapters, is given careful, sometimes per minute, description of the enthronement of a new monarch. 26 chromolithographs on separate sheets and drawings in the text depict all the stages of the coronation, related historical places, objects and persons.
The album is presented in the central vitrine and is complemented with the exhibition booths informing about the history of the ceremony of the coronation, about the tradition of publications of coronation albums, and about how the coronation of Alexander III was going on: as the event was prepared, how the ceremony looked like, which celebrations were devoted to this event.
