Memory of the world: The “Earth Destiny of the Virgin. On the Millenary of Russian Presence on Mount Athos” exhibition in Tula

30 June 2016

The “Earth Destiny of the Virgin. On the Millenary of Russian Presence on Mount Athos” exhibition opens June 30, 2016, in the Tula Regional Art Museum.

The 1000th anniversary of the presence of Russian monasticism on the Holy Mount Athos (Greece) is celebrated in 2016. This event is associated with the earliest written reference to the ancient Russian monastery on the Mount Athos. Namely, the Holy Mount’s document, in which a signature of an abbot of the ancient Russian monastery on Mount Athos appears first, dates back to the 1016 year. In one of the Holy Mount’s documents from the library of the Great Lavra of Athanasius of Athos under this date the signatures of all the abbots of all the monasteries of the Holy Mountain appeared at once.

In honor of the anniversary date, an exhibition, which shows the icons praising the Mother of God, the old printed books, the unique Athos and the Byzantine monuments of the XV - the XIX centuries, the gold embroidery pieces and other objects, opens at the Tula Regional Museum.
