History of Russia: “August 1991. Moscow Residents Recall” exhibition opened in the capital

“August 1991. Moscow Residents Recall” exhibition, covering the events that happened in the capital 25 years ago, will open at the Museum of Moscow on August 20, 2016. The exhibition includes photographs from the scene of the events and previously unpublished materials: audio records of the witnesses and the pictures that were taken by ordinary people.

The exhibition’s objective is to compare the official version of the events in the photographs by famous photographers with the impressions of Moscow residents.

“Museum will show the events of August 1991 in Moscow through the prism of human emotions, relationships, recorded memories - a phenomenon of the putsch of the State Committee on the State of Emergency (GKChP) appears here as an episode of the collective memory of the city community,” - said the museum's director Alina Saprykina.

The educational and the discussion programs are also prepared for the exhibition. It consists of a series of lectures about the events of August 1991, with participation of well-known journalists, political scientists, sociologists and community leaders.

The exhibition will run until the 23rd of September.
