Science and culture: Presentation of unique archaeological collection “Zvenigorod arsenal” in the Moscow region

12 August 2016

In the Russian Historical Society on August 15, 2016 will be held the presentation of a unique archaeological collection "Zvenigorod arsenal", followed by a transfer of the collection deposited in the Zvenigorod Historical and Architectural Museum.

In 2015, during archaeological excavations on the site Ignatyevskoe (are of the city district Zvenigorod) by expedition of the Institute of Archaeology RAS was discovered arsenal of rare objects of the XVI century - helmets, pieces of leather cover for a helmet, the details of the sheath swords, fragments of chain mail, arrows, garden tools.

Found helmets are rare goods of Russian armourers. Their closest analogues can be considered as a steel helmet of Ivan the Terrible, forged before 1547 (stored at the Royal Arsenal in Stockholm), and helmet of Ivan the Terrible’s son made before 1557 (now kept in the Armory). One of the hats was in a leather case. It is the only known case in domestic archeology of finding a special pouch for transportation and storage of military equipment outside of the combat situation.

In the Russian archaeology the finds of helmets are extremely rare. The latter was made about a quarter of a century ago. The opening of the Institute of Archaeology RAS gives domestic science material to study the life of the Russian army epoch of formation and flourishing of the Moscow State.

In late August, a valuable collection will be presented in the Zvenigorod History, Architecture and Art Museum.
