Internet and history: Archival materials to create VDNH are posted on the Web to the 77th anniversary of the exhibition

To the 77th anniversary of the Agricultural Exhibition – VDNH the Main Archive of capital has prepared a virtual exhibition. There you can see the historical materials about the creation of a complex of the Union Agricultural Exhibition.

Opening of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition was one of the main events of the pre-war history of the USSR. From the first days here have been shown the highest achievements in the field of industry, agriculture and the cultural life of the country. Agricultural exhibition was to be a permanent exhibition of a new type of school and mass experience.

The complex is situated on the northern outskirts of the capital. Its area, including ponds, experimental plots and parks amounted to 136 hectares.

At the exhibition were installed 400 sculptures, placed hundreds of paintings and murals, built 250 buildings, including halls of the Union republics and regions of the country, as well as industry pavilions.

Due to the outbreak of war, the exhibition was closed on June 26, 1941. Most of the exhibits and the library were evacuated to Chelyabinsk. On the territory of VDNH were installed several anti-aircraft batteries and pavilions masked dark cloth. During the war in the vast territory of the exhibition any bomb has not got.

The exhibition took guests since August 1, 1954. Then its architectural appearance has changed significantly, and the area has increased to 207 hectares.

July 4, 1956 by the decision of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the USSR Council of Ministers opened here-Union Industrial Exhibition. It was supposed to promote the achievements and prospects of socialist industry and the individual branches of industry, as well as to introduce the advanced experience of production innovators and inventors.

In 1958, industrial, agricultural and construction exhibition were united in the Exhibition of Economic Achievements of the USSR - VDNH.

This name it bears today too. In recent years it has become the largest exposition, museum and recreational complex in the world. Every year there are more than 24 million visitors, more than 100 international exhibitions and congresses take place, as well as dozens of festivals and holidays, creating new exposure. With the revival of the Green Theatre in 2014, the exhibition has become more popular as a concert venue, which takes the best musicians in the world.
