Memory of the World: Russia’s first monument to Omar Khayyam erected in Astrakhan

In Russian will be immortalized the memory of the great Iranian poet, mathematician, astronomer and educator Omar Khayyam. Monument to the famous classics of Persian-Tajik poetry will be erected in Astrakhan, they reported in the regional ministry of international and foreign economic relations.

Figure of Omar Khayyam is hoisted on a pedestal in the student square in front of the Astrakhan State University. The sculpture is performed in bronze by Chelyabinsk sculptor Sergei Vorobyov.

Monument is erected at the Chamber of Industry funds, trade, mining and agriculture, and the province of Gilan and will be given to residents of Astrakhan as a symbol of recognition of the role of the Astrakhan region in the development of Russian-Iranian trade and economic and cultural ties.

The grand opening of the monument will take place on August 4 during the official visit to the Astrakhan region of a delegation of the Iranian province of Gilan, headed by the Governor-General, Mohammad Ali Najafi.

So far, monuments to Omar Khayyam were opened in Tehran, Dushanbe, Ashgabat and Bucharest. The monument in Astrakhan was the only monument in Russia to the outstanding figure of the Iranian Scientific and Cultural Organization.
