The Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve, in the exhibition hall of the exposition "The Tale of Igor's Campaign" hosted an exhibition "The First Church of Yaroslavl. 800 years of the church of the Archangel Michael". Vernissage of the exhibition was held in the framework of the Inter-regional archaeological conference.
The exhibition "The First Church of Yaroslavl. 800 years of the church of the Archangel Michael" - the third in a row in a big museum project "Ancient temples of Yaroslavl". Subject of the history of Yaroslavl churches - one of the priorities for the Yaroslavl Museum-Preserve. Earlier in this project with a great success were held the exhibitions dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the Assumption Cathedral and the 400th anniversary of St. Cyril monastery.
New exhibition of the project is dedicated to the rich history of the church of the Archangel Michael. In preparation for the exhibition an active part of the temple took part abbot Priest Evgeny Volkov, who initiated the exhibition.
It is believed that the temple was laid by Rostov Prince Konstantin Vsevolodovich in 1215 and consecrated in 1216. Around 1300, at the same place by Princess Anne, the wife of Prince Yaroslavl Fedor Black, a new church was built. In it she put an icon of the Archangel Michael. The icon - a masterpiece of ancient art - and is preserved in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery. The exhibition presents a hard copy in the original size.
The history of the church in the late Middle Ages and the New Times presented authentic objects of XVI- XXI centuries from the collection of the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve - this icon, temple utensils, objects priestly vestments. The Yaroslavl Art Museum has provided for the display an icon "Zosima and Savvatiy of Solovki" of the XVI century. The interest of the visitors belonged to the icon of St. Elijah of Murom - the image is written in our time, and is constantly in the temple of Archangel Michael. Also in the display are printed copies of paintings, photographs and documents of XVII-XX centuries.
Great Jubilee of the Church of the Archangel Michael - a wonderful occasion to remember all of the ancient churches in the city: the exhibition includes photographs of the late XIX-early XX century of Yaroslavl churches built later on the site of the first temples of the pre-Mongol period and kept the original dedication.
