3 December 2016

The exhibition "Graphics of the walls. Sketches of monumental paintings of XIX - early XX centuries" was opened at the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow) within the project "The State Tretyakov Gallery opens its stores".

From the first years of the State Tretyakov Gallery sketches of murals have been the focus of attention in the formation of the collection. This section of the museum collection is actively updated now. Today, the Gallery reflected the works of many largest temples and secular ensembles of XIX - early XX centuries. The exhibition includes the best examples of them, and presented sketches of unknown, unpreserved and unsold paintings, many of which are exhibited for the first time.

Sketches of monumental paintings - one of the most interesting genres charts. The plane of the white sheet, a convention of graphic language, its decorative possibilities could not be more in tune with the characteristics and objectives of the monumental art. Projects compositions intended to embody in huge surfaces of walls, contain the potential for large-scale forms, distinguished by their accuracy and plastic beauty. However, sketches of paintings - a kind of a visual document of the epoch, which allows reconstructing of unrealized projects, enriching the understanding of the design movement, about the change of affiliation of the architect and the client, and sometimes a change of artistic epochs.
