Society and Science: The exhibition "The great experimenter" in St. Petersburg
The scientific and technical library of the Popov Central Museum of Communications (St. Petersburg) hosts the exhibition "The great experimenter" timed to the 160th anniversary of the German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1857-1894).
Heinrich Hertz - one of the leading lights in the field of physics teaching of electromagnetic vibrations. The unit of the oscillation frequency, the most important characteristics of any oscillatory processes is named after him.
Throughout his short but eventful life Hertz dedicated to science. Among his interests were meteorology, contact mechanics, electromagnetic waves.
In 1888 by his famous experiments Hertz conclusively proved the existence of electromagnetic waves having a finite speed of propagation in space.
We recall H. Hertz when we listen to the radio, watch TV. It is no accident the first words transmitted by the Russian physicist Alexander Popov on the first wireless communications were: "Heinrich Hertz".
The achievements of hertz include the opening of the external photoelectric effect.
For his experiments, Heinrich Hertz used equipment, which to a large extent anticipated device was the simplest radio station.
The materials from the Library's collections present detailed biographical information about an experimental physicist, and acquainted with his discoveries in the field of electricity.
The exhibition will run till February 28, 2017.
