History and culture: The exhibition "Architecture of Quarenghi in photographs" opened in the Hermitage

2 March 2017

The exhibition "Architecture of Quarenghi in photographs" was opened on March 2, 2017 in the foyer of the Hermitage Theatre (the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg).

Giacomo Quarenghi, a native of Bergamo neighborhoods in northern Italy, worked in Rome, where he became acquainted with the monuments of ancient architecture, which became samples for him.

In 1779 he came to St. Petersburg and soon became the favorite architect of Catherine II. In his projects here are built numerous buildings, both public and private, including the building of the Academy of Sciences, the Assignation Bank, the Smolny Institute, the Mariinsky Hospital, the main pharmacy. Quarenghi was the author of numerous interiors of the Winter Palace and the Hermitage, including the Hermitage Theatre.

Photo exhibition dedicated to the memory of Giacomo Quarenghi, will once again remind about the contribution of the architect in the creation of the classic shape of the city. Here are the most significant masters of construction, started in St. Petersburg and its environs. Particular attention is paid to the interiors of the Hermitage rooms which were designed by Quarenghi. Photos of the Hermitage employee Paul Demidov (autumn 2016), depicted the current state of Quarenghi creations and show convincingly that Quarenghi was not only a master of the individual buildings, but sought to create architectural ensembles, organizing space and the urban environment around their buildings.
