Internet and Culture: Google introduces new search opportunities for connoisseurs of art

8 June 2017

In Google, there are new search opportunities for connoisseurs of art. Now search results for queries related to painting will become more relevant, and information - more complete. In addition, Street View has a new feature that allows you to learn more about exhibits during virtual tours.

Now while the user enters the name of the artist in the search bar, an interactive panel appears with a lot of additional information. For example, you can see the collection of works of the master and a list of museums in which they are exhibited. And some of the paintings can be viewed in full detail thanks to high resolution images from Google Arts & Culture.

Now, moving around the museum halls in Google Maps, the user will clearly see the annotated tablets next to each picture. Clicking on the annotation, you can go to the details page, which the developers receive from hundreds of famous museums around the world. You can also consider the most famous canvases nearby increasing the image in high resolution.

This function works thanks to the program of recognition of visual images - the same as the technology of computer intelligence searches for pictures in Google Photos. The program scans the walls of museums around the world, identifies the pictures and distributes them into categories. The collection of Google already has more than 15,000 works.
