Memorable dates of Russia: The exhibition "Unknown Paustovsky. Life in publications: To the 125th anniversary of the writer's birth" is opened in Moscow

8 June 2017

In the Blue Exhibition Hall of the Russian State Library (Moscow), until June 30, 2017 will be held an exhibition, which became one of the main jubilee projects of 2017 in Russia and abroad - "Unknown Paustovsky. Life in publications: To the 125th anniversary of the writer's birth". The exhibition project was prepared by the Russian State Library, the K. G. Paustovsky Moscow Literary Museum-Center and the A. M. Gorky World Literature Institute.

The basis of the exhibition in the Blue Hall of the RSL - the documents exhibited for the first time: autographs of Konstantin Georgievich's works, his diaries, work notes and letters, books with donative inscriptions, manuscripts of Paustovsky's contemporaries on his works, little-known publications in periodicals, books that have become bibliographic rarity.

The K. G. Paustovsky Moscow Literary Museum-Center gave forty-seven rare documents for the exhibition, of which twenty-five are exhibited for the first time. Guests of the exhibition will see autographs of the writer's early works, autobiographical notes, diaries, including diaries of travels to Kara-Bugaz (1931), Petrozavodsk (1931-1932) and Colchis (1933); they will get acquainted with rare photos and letters. It is very important to understand how the writer lived, and personal things and documents of the writer will help in this: a typewriter, fountain pen and inkwell belonging to Konstantin Paustovsky, his ticket to the member of the Union of Soviet Writers and others. For the first time the museum shows the autograph of the story "Autumn" (1918), typewritten texts of the copyrights "Concert in Varday" (1922), "The Marine Inoculation" (1927), work recordings for the "Golden Rose" and "The Tale of Life" Works of the writer.

The Russian State Library for the first time exhibits eleven items from the manuscript department, including the autograph of the story "Nastia Lace-maker" (1942), Konstantin Georgievich Paustovsky's books with the inscriptions of Elena Sergeevna Bulgakova (1940s), Abram Borisovich Derman's review of the writer's book "Early years" (1946) and others. An interesting section of his first publications in the magazines "Fires" (1912) and "Knight" (1913), in the newspaper "Vyatka speech" (1915), lifetime publications of the writer, is stored in the Museum of the book and the main fund of the RSL. The exhibition is added with geographical maps related to the life and work of Konstantin Georgievich, and his portraits. They were provided by specialized departments of the RSL - cartography and fine art materials.

For the first time the materials of the exhibition, combined together in such completeness, allow us to present unknown and poorly understood facets of the writer's creative biography, to trace the fate of his selected works from drafts and copyright manuscripts to the first publications in the periodical press and selected book publications. Critical publications and reviews of literary contemporaries, as well as the facts of his literary and social activities, which the exposition will tell, will give the most complete picture of the bright personality of Konstantin Georgievich Paustovsky and the outstanding role of his creativity in the context of the literary process of the XX century.
