Information technology and history: An electronic database about the participants of the First World War to be created in Russia

Rosarkhiv and the Ministry of Defense of Russia are planning to launch a project to digitize the card index of the loss accounting bureau at the fronts of the First World War.

On the basis of this card file will be created an electronic database, said a representative of the Federal Archival Agency (Rosarkhiv) Tatiana Zanina.

"After the First World War, military captivity for the first time turned into a mass phenomenon", - she said, speaking at a joint round table with the International Committee of the Red Cross "1914-1918: Documents on prisoners of war and repatriated World War I in the archives of Europe". - Out of 60 million people called up for guns and to some extent involved in military operations, more than 8 million were prisoners of war. Of these, about 2.4 million were soldiers and officers of the Russian army".

According to her, the card file contains more than 7 million cards as well as information about the dead and missing soldiers of the Russian Imperial Army, as well as about prisoners of war.
