History and Culture: The exhibition "Peter I in Astrakhan"
In the Astrakhan Museum of Local History was opened an exhibition "Peter I in Astrakhan", dedicated to the 295th anniversary of the Emperor's stay in Astrakhan. It takes place in the framework of events for the 300th anniversary of the province, the institution of which occurred in 1717 on the initiative of one of the outstanding rulers of the Russian state.
The First All-Russian Emperor, like no other, realized the importance of the Astrakhan region as a southern outpost of Russia and a transit trade point.
In 1722-23, Peter I, together with Empress Catherine I and accompanied by retinue and army, visited Astrakhan, which at that time became the base for the forthcoming military intervention - the Persian campaign.
One of the blocks of the exhibition "The Astrakhan region in the XVI-XVIII centuries" of the Museum of Local History, which is dedicated to the history of the region during the reign of Peter the First, recalls these events. The exposition presents a board with carved convex ornament from the plesir yacht, on which Peter traveled on the outskirts of Astrakhan, the magazine of the emperor's stay in the city, the impression of the hand of the famous ruler, the portrait gallery of the king's associates, navigational instruments, household items of the first quarter of the XVIII century.
The existing complex is now supplemented by a temporary exhibition that covers the activities of Peter I in the Astrakhan region. It reflects the key points of the reformist king's policy - changes in the economy, in relations with the church's institution, in the social sphere. The exhibition presents original items from the first half of the XVIII century from the collections of the Astrakhan Museum-Reserve: a numismatic collection, objects of church use, books, household items.
