8 August 2017

ELAR Corporation announces the opening of the portal "In memory of the heroes of the Great War of 1914-1918" - the first official bank of documents on the participants and events of the First World War.

The portal "In memory of the heroes of the Great War of 1914-1918" was created by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation with the support of the Federal Archival Agency and the Russian Historical Society. The idea of the project is to give anyone who wants access to documents about Russian Army servicemen during the First World War.

To fill the portal with documents and data, the ELAR Corporation digitized a part of the file cabinet of the "Special office work for the collection and registration of information on those who died after death or behind wounds, as well as missing military ranks acting against the enemy armies of the General Staff", which is included in Fund № 16 196 of the Russian State Military Historical Archive. Currently, the portal contains information about 2 278 000 accounts. This information resource, numbering more than nine million cards, is planned to be processed for the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The site also contains information on 3,066 awards received as a result of digitizing the collection of the Highest Orders for the Military Department for 1914 - a print edition from the State Public Historical Library of Russia.

Anyone can find information and documents about relatives who served in the Russian army. Search can be carried out by last name, first name, patronymic, date and place of birth, dates and duty stations. Also, the portal makes it possible to search for information and by indirect signs - an approximate location of places of residence, death or burial on modern maps.

An important independent element of the portal is the section "Archival Documents". Here are placed the historical affairs of military units, including descriptions of military operations, historical maps, albums with photographs and other documents. In addition, the user, knowing only the part number, can trace the combat path and find descriptions of the battles in which the person sought could have taken part.

The Bank of Documents also contains a list of military graves and memorial complexes of the First World War, located on the territory of the Russian Federation and abroad. The burial places are displayed in the form of a list or on a modern map. The electronic copies of passports and modern photographs of most burials, as well as their 3D models, are presented.
