14 August 2017

The exhibition "Testimonies of the past ages. The Pskov Kremlin according to archeology" is held in the Vlasyevskaya Tower of the Pskov Kremlin.

The Pskov Kremlin (Krom, Dovmontov city) - one of the main attractions of modern Pskov, the birthplace of the ancient Russian city, the political, spiritual center of the Pskov land in its heyday, a monument of fortification art. The exhibition presents a small part of the materials from archaeological collections formed as a result of excavations in the Pskov Kremlin and Dovmont town and stored in the funds of the Pskov Museum-Reserve.

The Pskov Kremlin acquired its modern appearance in the second half of the XX century, after extensive restoration work. They were started in the 1950s of the last century and continue to the present day.

From 1956 to 1990, excavations in the Dovmont city were carried out by the expedition of the State Hermitage - first under the direction of G. Grozdilov, and from 1963 - by V. Beletsky. This is a special page in the history of Pskov archeology. During that period, the remains of ten stone temples of the 12th-16th centuries, remains of fortifications of the 13th-15th centuries, street pavements, remains of urban buildings of the X-XIII centuries, burials of townspeople at church cemeteries were uncovered and studied.

Among the discoveries made in Pskov by the Hermitage expedition, the most important are the ensemble of the Dovmontov temples of the city and a complex of leaden lead seals. In 9 of the 10 churches were found fragments of frescoes. In the churches of the Nativity of Christ and the Resurrection (the Intercession and St. Nicholas with Rowing on the attribution of V. Beletsky) the murals have reached a better preservation and are distinguished by high artistic merits. In one of the civil buildings of Dovmontova city, the remains of a medieval archive were found, consisting of the leaden lead seals of the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. Most of the collections obtained during excavations in the Dovmont city are kept in the Hermitage.
