Birth of Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod Nikolai Kirillovich Chukov

On February 1 (13), 1870 in the city of Petrozavodsk Nikolai Kirillovich Chukov (in the world), Metropolitan Grigory of Leningrad and Novgorod, was born into a secular family, a worker of spiritual enlightenment of the Russian Orthodox Church. He came from a family of well-known Zaonezhsky storytellers of epics.

In 1889 Nikolai Kirillovich graduated from the Olonets Theological Seminary and in 1895 from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

From 1911 to 1918 he was a diocesan observer of parochial schools and literacy schools in the city of Petrozavodsk. In 1897 he was elevated to the rank of priest, in 1907 - to the rank of archpriest. From 1911 he served as rector of the Olonets Theological Seminary, chairman of the Diocesan School Council.

In April 1911 the first issue of the weekly unofficial provincial newspaper Olonetskaya Nedelya was published, the editor and publisher of which was Nikolai Kirillovich Chukov. The newspaper published articles about the events of the administrative, religious, social, economic and cultural life of the Olonets province. The publication of the newspaper ceased at the beginning of 1918. Also from 1917 Chukov worked as the editor of the unofficial part of the Olonets Diocesan Vedomosti newspaper, which was published until June 1, 1918.

In the spring of 1918 Nikolai Kirillovich was arrested, removed from office and exiled outside the Olonets province. From 1919 he lived in Petrograd, participated in the creation of the Petrograd Theological Institute and led it from 1920 to 1922. He served as rector of the Kazan Cathedral, and then - the Peter and Paul University Church. In 1922, Nikolai Kirillovich Chukov was again arrested, sentenced to death, commuted to five years in the camps. A year and a half later, he was released under an amnesty.

Since 1924 he was the rector and teacher of the Higher Theological Courses, at the same time serving as rector of the Nikolo-Bogoyavlensky Cathedral in Leningrad. In 1926 he defended his master's thesis.

In the spring of 1935 Nikolai Chukov was exiled to Saratov. In 1942, he took monastic vows under the name Gregory and was consecrated Bishop of Saratov. During the siege of the city of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War, he lost his wife and three children.

Since 1944 Nikolai Kirillovich has been the Archbishop of Pskov and Porkhov, with the temporary administration of the Leningrad, Novgorod (1945–1955) and Olonets (1944–1947, since 1949) dioceses. In 1945-1955 he was Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod. From 1945 he also managed Russian communities and monasteries in Finland.

Nikolai Kirillovich Chukov did a lot to restore destroyed churches and revive spiritual education; he was the author of the project for the establishment of theological schools.

Nikolai Chukov died on November 5, 1955. He was buried on the territory of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg.
