The church of St. Peter the Apostle in the village of Marcial Vody consecrated

The wooden church of St. Peter the Apostle in the village of Marcial Vody, Kondopoga region of Republic of Karelia is a unique architectural structure of the 18th century, a historical monument of the federal level. The church is located on the territory of the first Russian resort "Marcial Waters", founded on March 20, 1719 and is the only architectural monument of the resort that has survived from the time of the Petrine era.

According to legend, the holy temple in the name of the First Supreme Apostle Peter was built of timber according to the instructions, plans and drawings of Peter I in 1720-1721. On February 18, 1722 it was consecrated.

The church and the bell tower are crowned with semicircular domes and pyramidal spiers. The utensils of the church, which previously belonged to the Holy Trinity Alexander-Svirsky Monastery, were brought from the Olonets shipyard. To this day, two cast-iron stoves have survived, reminiscent of antique vases, cast at the Petrovsky factories, as well as wooden, carved candlesticks, made in the turnery of Peter I.

The iconostasis of the temple is carved, two-tiered with icons from the beginning of the 18th century, framed by skillfully carved wood garlands of flowers, leaves, fruits, white vines. It was transported from the church of Lodeynoye Pole.

The non-commissioned librarian of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Osip Petrovich Belyaev, in his work “The Cabinet of Peter the Great” (St. Petersburg, 1793) described the church of the Apostle Peter, “in which the images of the Savior, the Mother of God, the Apostle Peter, the Wonderworker Nicholas, John Chrysostom and Alexander Nevsky are created in good painting even under the sovereign Peter the Great, and in which this sovereign ordered to hang ... a chandelier carved with his own hands.

Of particular value is the main temple icon “Saint Peter the Apostle”, depicting the apostle against the background of a rock, behind which Jesus Christ is walking along the sea, and a ship with the state flag of Russia is sailing nearby. At the feet of the Apostle Peter is the key. There are various interpretations of the plot of the icon. According to one of them, the icon symbolizes the victory of Russia in the Northern War, according to another, the healing of Peter I on the waters.

After the death of Peter I, the church was administered by the Konchezero plant. It was repaired in 1832 and 1879. In 1935 it was taken under the protection of the state as a rare example of the construction of the Petrine era. In 1949, 1986–1987 the church was undergoing restoration work.

Now the unique temple is part of the branch of the National Museum of Republic of Karelia in the village of Marcial Vody.
