Birth of Pavel Stepanovich Sharov, Participant of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union

16 July 1922

Pavel Stepanovich Sharov was born on July 16, 1922 in an incomplete peasant family in Sozonovo Village of Tyumen District. Pavel was brought up by his mother alone. In 1930, she died, and the boy became an orphan.

In 1937, he graduated from the seven-year Borki School, entered the Tyumen Argricultural Technical College, and attended summer courses at the Tyumen Aeroclub. In 1940, he was recruited by the Tyumen Regional Military Commissariat to the Red Army. In 1942, he trained in the Omsk Aviation Pilot School.

On the frontlines of the Great Patriotic War, Pavel Stepanovich Sharov fought from August, 1943. He was appointed Deputy Squadron Commander of the 723rd assault aviation regiment of the 211st assault aviation division of the 3rd air army of the 1st Baltic front. He fought on the 1st Baltic and Kalinin Fronts. He was baptized by fire outside of Smolensk, near Dukhovshchina. He participated in the battles for liberation of Smolensk, Pskov and Vitebsk Regions, as well as the battles on the territory of Nazi Germany. Overall during the years of the Great Patriotic War, he made 140 combat flights, 72 of them – in order to obtain information about the enemy’s troops. He pointed out 18 masked targets on the front border and the rear of the enemy to the command. Over 900 soldiers and officers of the opponent, 15 tanks, 124 cargo automobiles were destroyed by him. His crew also blew up 8 warehouses of the ammunition, fuel and lubricants, shot down one Henschel-126 aircraft, stifled 70 locations of anti-aircraft artillery.

Under the order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on February 23, 1945, Pavel Stepanovich Sharov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. For his military services, he was awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd classes, the Order of the Red Star, the Order of Glory of the 3rd class, and many other state awards.

In 1951, Pavel Stepanovich Sharov graduated from the Air Force Academy in Monino Village of Moscow Region. He made flights on the jet machines and was the regiment commander. In 1961, he was discharged as a Colonel. In 1966, he finished his studies at the Ural State University. Then, he lived in Yekaterinburg, worked as the head of the laboratory in the Research Institute of Automation.

Pavel Stepanovich Sharov died on October 4, 2004. He was buried on the Shirokorechenskoye cemetery in Yekaterinburg. One of the streets in Sozonovo Village of Tyumen District was named after him. In the memory of Pavel Stepanovich Sharov, a plaque was installed on the building of the school that he attended.

Pavel Stepanovich Sharov was a true patriot of Russia. He proved his love and loyalty to the Motherland through his heroic deeds in the war with the Nazi invaders.
