Anniversary of foundation of K. D. Ushinsky Scientific Pedagogic Library

19 September 1925

September 19, 1925 in Moscow under the Information Department of the People's Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR was established Reference Library (now K. D. Ushinsky State Scientific Pedagogical Library of the Russian Academy of Education).

In 1932 the Library was merged with the Central Pedagogical Library, and in 1939 by order of the Commissar of Education it received the status of the State Library for Public Education. In 1944, by a resolution of the government, the library was included in the network of scientific institutions of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of RSFSR, and in 1966 - the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. In 1945 it was named after a great Russian teacher Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushyns'ky. Since 1970, it became known as K. D. Ushinsky State Scientific Pedagogical Library under the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR (since 1991 – the Russian Academy of Education).

The complex of buildings, which houses the library, is a monument of architecture: the urban homestead of the end of XVIII - early XIX centuries built in the classical style (architect M. Kazakov).

The library is the largest industry in the country pedagogical library, repository of educational literature, information and bibliographic center in the area of pedagogy and education, industry scientific and methodological center for the libraries of educational institutions, primary and secondary vocational teacher education.

Specialized library holdings, with more than 1.5 million items, contains literature of the historical, theoretical and practical nature on pedagogy, education, psychology, speech correction and related sciences, published in Russia in Russian language and foreign literature in 39 languages of the peoples world.

The collection of textbooks and teaching aids for secondary school, programs and teaching materials of domestic pre-revolutionary and the Soviet school are of a great value. There are more than 250 titles of educational magazines published before 1917 and about 500 titles of similar editions of the Soviet period, among which a particular value represent numerous magazines on cultural development and public education of the first years of Soviet power. Especially valuable is the collection of primers, from facsimile editions of ABC by Ivan Fedorov (1574) and Primer of Koriona Istomin to the first Soviet stable primers, which began to publish in 1932.

In 1993 the library was granted the status of a special social significance on the national scale.

Since 1994, the Library started to develop an electronic database on pedagogy and education, which includes descriptions of domestic and foreign publications: monographs, collected works of institutes, conference proceedings, dissertation abstracts, teaching aids, articles from Russian and foreign periodicals with annotations, and other materials on all aspects of educational theory and practice.

The library disposes of a local computer network which automates the basic library processes, developed a system of automated information retrieval, which is maintained by using various information retrieval languages.
