Birth of Vladimir K. Andrievich, Major-General, Chief of Staff of the Transbaikal region, explorer of Transbaikal

26 September 1838

Vladimir Konstantinovich (Kalistratovich) Andrievich, Russian General, veteran of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, Transbaikal researcher was born 14 (26), 1838 in Mozdok.

In 1857, Vladimir Andrievich graduated from the St. Petersburg First Cadet Corps; in 1859-1861 he completed the highest course of Military Sciences at the Academy of the General Staff. In 1881-1884, in the rank of Major-General, he was the Chief of Staff of the Transbaikal region; in 1884 he was transferred to Irkutsk as the provincial military commander; in 1886 - to Krasnoyarsk; from August 1888 to 1890, he was the commandant of the Ochakovo fortress.

While Vladimir Konstantinovich was serving as Chief of Staff in the Trans-Baikal region in Chita, a question was raised about the reorganization of the Transbaikal region Cossack army. Andrievich brilliantly coped with his task to organize the census and systematization of information on the Transbaikal Cossack army.

In 1883-1885, four issues of "Materials for population statistics in the Transaikal Cossack army" were published in Chita and Irkutsk. They gave birth to a series of historical works by Andrievich. The desire to supplement statistical "Materials" with historical sketch of Transbaikal prompted Vladimir Konstantinovich to study history of the region and of Siberia as a whole. In 1887, in St. Petersburg, was published his book "A short essay on the history of Transbaikal region from ancient times to 1762", which tells about the history of settlement of the region.

Andrievich called Transbaikal a greatest Siberian Italy, considered the area the most strategically important and valuable of all the lands of Eastern Siberia: "Without any benefits from the government, neglected by the former administrators of the Eastern Siberia, the region, flooded by exiled and convicts of all categories, managed to become the breadbasket of the Outer Manchuria District and Irkutsk province." At the same time Andrievich began to write the great work - "Historical Sketch of Siberia", six issues of which were published under various headings, as well as other works where the author analyzed the experience of three hundred years of development and settlement of the Siberian region.

Particular attention in his study Andrievich paid to development of new territories, building of cities and fortresses, administrative management; he analyzed measures to strengthen the social and military structures in the region. The author presented extensive material on the development of military science, handicrafts, trade, cultural and religious life of Siberia.

The works of Vladimir Konstantinovich occupy an important place in the Siberian historiography. They are of great interest to historians, statisticians, ethnographers and other professionals as well as anyone interested in the history of Russia and Siberia.
